Abstract: The I-71/75 & KY 338 Richwood Road Interchange Project is part of a comprehensive plan by the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) and Boone County to improve transportation service in the rapidly growing I-71/I-75 corridor.
The area surrounding the KY 338 (Richwood Road) interchange has experienced rapid development, leading to increased traffic on the local road network. Add to this the continued growth in traffic on I-75, one of the nation’s largest commercial routes, and you get traffic congestion and high accident rates. With this area expected to continue to grow over the next 20 years, so will the congestion and safety issues.
Abstract: This site does not force left turns to occur on quadrant roadways, but the design is flexible, giving them a "get out of jail free" card when congestion is so bad that quadrants could improve things. Also improves general connectivity of this busy activity center.
Abstract: New interchanges were considered at this location in 2005, with the widening of both Hanover Road and MD 295. The DDI was not selected as the chosen alternative because state officials did not want the first DDI in Maryland to go in a location where there would be a lot of unfamiliar drivers. This new interchange is planned to be the entrance to the rental car facility for BWI Airport.
